Fire is the one emergency at sea with no good second move. A man overboard leaves minutes, a sinking hull leaves hours, but an engine-room or galley fire on a fibreglass boat leaves roughly three minutes before heat and toxic smoke make the cabin unsurvivable. There is no running from it; the ocean is outside and the fire is inside. Offshore crews treat fire prevention with the same paranoia as collision avoidance, because the chemistry of a boat, diesel, gas, batteries and resin, is a bonfire waiting for a spark. Here is where the risks actually live and how working skippers keep them locked down.
Gas: The Silent Guest in the Bilge
Propane and butane are heavier than air, and any leak drains straight into the bilge where it pools invisibly until a bilge-pump switch or a starter motor provides the ignition. The rules are absolute and boring: the gas bottle lives in a self-draining locker vented overboard, the solenoid shutoff at the bottle is closed whenever the stove is not actively in use, and a gas sniffer with a bilge sensor alarms before the concentration reaches a fraction of the explosive limit. The habit that saves lives is the sniff test plus the solenoid ritual at every meal's end. Crews who leave the line pressurised overnight are carrying a bomb with a slow fuse.

Electrics: Where Most Boat Fires Begin
Surveyors and insurers agree on the numbers: the majority of boat fires start in the wiring, not the galley. Chafed cables behind panels, corroded terminals that heat under load, oversized fuses installed to stop a nuisance blow, and lithium battery banks charged without a proper management system account for most cases. The defence is inspection and discipline. Every season, run a hand along accessible cable runs feeling for chafe, open the main panel and sniff for the hot-plastic smell that precedes trouble, and check that every fuse matches the wire it protects. A thermal check after a long engine run, feeling the alternator terminals and the battery posts for warmth, catches the loose connection that would otherwise smoulder at 2 a.m.

Every offshore boat should carry more extinguishers than regulations demand, and every crew member should know that a one-kilogram dry-powder unit empties in eight to twelve seconds. The tactics follow from the physics: fight a fire only in its first minute, always with an exit behind you, and discharge the entire extinguisher in one continuous sweep at the base of the flames. If the fire is not out after one full unit, the fight is over; the crew closes hatches to starve the space of oxygen, launches the raft and calls the world on the EPIRB. Engine-space fires get special treatment: never open the compartment to look, because the rush of oxygen converts a smoulder into a flashover. Discharge through the port and wait.
